Textile design: career directions.

Textile design develops fabrics and surfaces through structure, colour, pattern and material processes.

Possible directions include textile designer, surface designer, material researcher. Consider these as areas to investigate, rather than guaranteed outcomes from a degree.

Build evidence of your process

Develop projects that demonstrate weave structures, surface development, colour systems. Describe your contribution and decisions clearly. A strong project explains why an outcome fits a particular user and context.

Research the work before choosing a title

Read current job descriptions in the country where you want to work. Note the recurring responsibilities, skills and experience requirements. Speak to practitioners about their day-to-day work and compare their descriptions with your assumptions.

Assess programme outcomes carefully

Ask institutions for published outcomes and how the data was collected. Check whether figures describe all graduates, respondents to a survey or a selected group. We do not publish unverified salary bands or placement claims.
